"I'm A Little Lost Sheep" Activity |
Supplies:
Instructions:
(and see dialog below)
| Long robes (for 1 or more adults) |
Prep: Note: If you have more than a few children, it would be good to have more than one shepherd. Gather supplies, make the no-sew shepherd's hats ahead of time. Enlarge pattern on copier. Use the enlarged copy as your pattern. Lay pattern on fold, as indicated on pattern, pin, and cut out of fabric. Have the shepherd get dressed in their outfit over their regular clothes: Wear a robe with a tie, sandals, and your shepherd's hat: You just place the hat on your head so that it opens in front, and push headband over the top to make gathers! Its good to do this activity before snack, so you have a good motivation for the children to want to finish...they may want to keep playing for a long time. |
| sandals (for the adults who will be shepherd's) | |||
Shepherd's hats (for 1 or more adults): (Make from Easy no-sew shepherd's hat pattern |
| Lightweight woven fabric (cotton, rayon, etc.) for shepherd's hat. Striped fabric give hats an interesting look. | |||
| Stretchy ties or head bands for shepherd's hats | |||
| Ties to go around their waists | |||
Snack
or extra suprise for snack (candy or cookies, etc.)
Dialog for "I'm a Little Lost Sheep" Activity. |
Say, "To help you understand the story, let's pretend we are sheep. I will be the shepherd (or name the people who will be) that has to go and find the sheep that get lost." (Tell them where the pasture area will be, and tell them that its dangerous to go to the other areas because there are cliffs over there...and deep wells you can fall into over there...etc.) Show the group of sheep how they say baa-a-a to sound like sheep, and place their hands on top of their heads to make ears, or walk hunched over or crawl). |
To
show them how to play: (Have all the sheep gather around you (the shepherd)
and count all of your sheep at the beginning. Have at least one adult
be a sheep wander off by himself]. "I hope none of my sheep
wander off. When my little sheep wanders off, they get lost",
(Have the adult sheep run off and hide behind something). "Now
I will count my sheep to make sure they are all here." (Begin
counting). "Un-oh...one of my little sheep is missing. Is it
______? No, she is here with me. Is it _____? No,He is here too."
(Fill in the blanks with a few of the children's names, then name the
"sheep" who is lost.) "Oh, its _____ who is missing.
Oh no, my precious little sheep is missing. I will go find him."
(Go off to look for the sheep, look in a few places where you know they
are not to make it fun. You both jump up and down and act happy when
you find the llost sheep. Then lead him (gently) back to the pasture.)
Now
tell the children that they can all wander off so the shepherd can come
and find them. As they start wandering off, start saying names again,
asking who is missing. When you go to find them, if you are in good
physical shape, you can pick up the children and put them over your
shoulder, or give them a "shoulder back ride", or carry them
an easier way, or just lead them by the hand, back to the pasture area).
If they want you to get them "unstuck from a bush" or help them in another way, just play along with their request (if appropriate, or course). Treat them extra special when you find them. Ask them if they are hurt or scared. Pat them to comfort them, hug them, tickle them (if they like tickling), or lift them up high in the air, etc. |
When you have found all of the sheep and have brought them each back at least once, you can say, "Ok, I think all of my little sheep have been found and brought home. I think they are getting hungry. I wouldn't want them to go hungry, so let's come back to the snack table for a snack." (Gather up the children for snack). |
| The shepherd had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb. | Curl hands up and place on head, and wiggle like ears. | ||
| The shepherd had a little lamb. Its wool was soft as fuzz. | Move fingers in a scrunching motion. | ||
| The shepherd had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb. | Curl hands up and place on head like lamb ears. | ||
| And, everything his shepherd did, the la-amb also does. | Shake head "yes". | ||
| The shepherd had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb. | Curl hands up and place on head like lamb ears. | ||
| The shepherd had a little lamb. He would always pray. | Place hands together as if praying. | ||
| The shepherd had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb. | Curl hands up and place on head like lamb ears. | ||
| And, everywhere the shepherd was, his lamb was sure to stay. | Sit down on floor, or stoop down. | ||
| Jesus has a little child, little child, little child. | Flex wrist, and place hand horzontally in front of you, down low at waist level. | ||

| Jesus has a little child, little child, little child. | Flex wrist, and place palm horzontally in front of you, down low at waist level. | ||
| I'll be sure to follow him, and always let him lead. | Move fingers in walking motion. | ||
Needed to Play: Pictures of sheep. Print and cut apart. |
PREP: Hide the sheep in classroom before class, or when they go outside (if that is part of your curriculum). Have extras in your pocket to give to the children who are having a hard time finding any. You can hide right before you give a hint to where a sheep might be, that way he is sure to find it . |
| Prize for each child (candy, stickers, small toys or puzzles). | How To Play: Just like a traditional Easter Egg hunt, only the children are the "shepherds" who go look for all the lost sheep. | ||
| When most or all of the sheep have been found, have them bring their sheep over to you. Give them a prize, no matter how many they have. | |||
