The first story in our Nativity series tells the exciting nativity story of how the angel visited Mary and then Joseph. It talks about the meaning of Immanuel (God with us) and links this to the key concepts: God loves me and wants to be near me. God promises to love me always. God wants to be my best friend. The Bible memory verse for this lesson is Jeremiah 31:3. bible verses used for reference for this lesson include John 3:16 and Luke 1-26-56. In Circle Talk Time, the discussion includes talking about Jeremiah 3:13 and how God will always love us. That it means he will never leave us, and he will never take his love away! This starts the Christmas spirit and emphasizes that this is a great reason to be happy, especially at Christmas time! For the Nativity Sunday School lesson there are Nativity bible story pictures in color and black and white, which can also be used as Nativity coloring pages. Nativity activities include a snack idea, a Nativity pretend play activity, a Nativity action rhyme (God Will Always Love Me!), and a second Nativity activity. A prayer is also included with this lesson, as with each of Sunday School Fun Zone's lessons for toddlers and preschool children. You will have access to all of the printable resources shown on this page when you join Sunday School Fun Zone! |

(1) Last week we heard the story of how baby Jesus was born in a stable, where the animals stayed. (2)Mary wrapped him up snugly in some cloths to keep him comfy and warm. (Take the doll and wrap it in cloths and blankets). We can use this doll to show you how Mary wrapped up baby Jesus. Who wants to help me wrap the doll? (Let some of the children put the cloths around the doll). There was no crib to put him in. (Shake head no). (3) Do you remember where Mary laid baby Jesus? (Give children a chance to answer). Right! I'm so glad you are learning! Mary laid baby Jesus in the manger. A manger is the box where the animals' food was put. A little baby would fit nicely in there. And maybe they put straw in the box to make a soft place for baby Jesus to sleep. Who wants to help me make it soft and fluffy? (Let children help you fluff up the paper shred). There. That would be o.k. to sleep on. Then Mary laid baby Jesus in the manger. Who wants to lay the doll in the box for me? (Pick a child to lay the doll in the box). Thank you, _____. And, God watched over baby Jesus as he slept in the manger. (4) At the same time that baby Jesus was born something else happened: In a field close by, some shepherds were watching over their lambs, just like they always did. But, today something special happened. (5) The shepherds looked up in the sky, and they saw a bright light! Do you know what they saw? It was an angel! The shepherds were afraid. Let's look in our Bibles and see what the angel told the shepherds: (Read Luke 2:10-11). Wait! I hear something. (Cup your ear). I hear beautiful songs of praise to God! What could that be? (6) More angels! They were praising God for the joy and peace that Jesus would bring to the people. Here's what they said: (Read Luke 2:14). Then soon it was very quiet again. Sh-h-h-h! (whisper). I don't hear anything anymore. Where did all the angels go? (Hold hands out to sides). They went back up to heaven. (Point up). (Resume a normal voice). Now what would the shepherds do? They were so excited about what the angels told them! They had to go see Jesus for themselves. (7) So, they said to each other, "Let's hurry and go to Bethlehem." Hurry up, shepherds, hurry up! Run and see baby Jesus! So the shepherds ran off to go see baby Jesus. Let's make the sound of the shepherds running. (Pat your lap real fast). (8) When they got there, they found Mary and Joseph; And, there was little baby Jesus! He was lying in a manger, just like the angel told them. And he was wearing cloths wrapped around him! Everything happened exactly the way the angels said! What a happy time! The shepherds were so excited they couldn't keep it all to themselves. They told all the people about baby Jesus! - the Savior who had been born on that very special day! And, they told the people what the angels said too! All the people were so surprised! And, they believed the shepherds. Then the shepherds went back to their fields to watch over their lambs. And, they sang praises to God all the way! (9) We can sing a song of praise to God too. (Sing Away in the Manger). |
CIRCLE TIME: (What does this mean for me?) |
Did you like that story? It is one of my very favorite stories in the whole Bible! The angel comes and tells the shepherds that baby Jesus was born! Let's read what the angels said again (Read Luke 2:14 again). That means that God was telling us that he was bringing peace to the earth. When he sent Jesus from heaven he was giving us the promise of peace! God was telling us that he is our friend. And, that he wants to forgive us. And, who was that promise for? (Read Luke 2:10 again). That means the promise of peace was for everybody! Jesus was born for everybody! He was born for ______. (Repeat the sentence for every child and adult in the room, inserting their name in the blank). When we trust in the Lord, he promises to give us peace. We will know that God is by our side, and we know that no matter what happens, he will be with us and help us. (10) When we get lay down to go to sleep at night, we can sleep in peace. This is a good verse for us to remember: (Read Psalm 4:8) Just like God watched over baby Jesus sleeping in the manger, God is watching over you too. That is because he loves you so much. We can sleep in peace because we know God is our friend, and that he gives us the promise of peace. |

doll with short hair.

Prep: If you cannot find a wood crate, a box will do fine. Follow the directions on the back of the contact paper, cover sides of box with contact paper that looks like wood. You could also just make lines on the outside of the box with a brown crayon to make it look like wood. Read through the story in the lesson to become familiar with the actions you will do. When the story tells you, do the following: Take the baby doll and gently wrap it in the cloths and blankets. Fluff up the paper shred in the box. Lay the doll gently on top and pat its head. After the lesson, tell the children they will each get a turn to pretend to be Mary. (You could also do this activity as a warm-up activity as children are coming in the classroom). While the children are doing the craft or playing, you or your helper can take one or two children over to the box and talk to them about how Mary wrapped baby Jesus in cloths and laid in the manger. Show them how Mary might have done this, and help them if they need help. Let them each take a turn wrapping the doll and laying it gently in the box. |

| Shepherd, Mary and Joseph, and angel costumes for children (optional). |
Costumes: Help children dress in costumes. Give lambs to shepherds. Act out the story in a very simplified way. "Mary wraps the doll and places in manger. "Angel" visits "shepherds" and tells them the good news of Jesus' birth. "Angel" goes away. "Shepherds" run to manger. "Shepherds" tell everyone about Jesus' birth. Dolls: Help the children dress the dolls in bible costumes, and act out story as above. You can make hats to fit your dolls: Print hat pattern. Trace around pattern and cut out. Try on doll. If it needs to be longer, add to next pattern in that place. Or, but away fabric to fit doll. Retry on doll until it fits. Keep final pattern for future use. Use thin string to tie around hats (Do NOT use thick string or yarn could be a choking hazard). |
