Snack idea:
Snack: Jelly filled chocolates, or surprise muffins with something on the inside. Reinforce the lesson by saying that we could not see what was on the inside of this candy, just like we cannot see on the inside of a person. Only God sees what a person is like on the inside.
Pretend Play Activity - Let's Pretend to Be Jesse's Sons!

If you have Bible costumes, and time permits, you may want the children dress up in them. CD player or radio. How to Do Activity: Start the music. have the children line up on one side of the room. Let them walk across the front of the room (where you are) one by one. Have your assistant stop the music after a minute or two. If you do not have a CD player, let your assistant sing or hum a tune. Whoever is walking across the room when the music stops, gets a prize (sticker or other small prize). Stop and make a big deal out of it, saying, _____ (child's name) you are the one who is picked, just like David! But instead of pouring oil on your head, we are going to give you a sticker instead. Continue until all of the children have been picked.

Action Rhyme - God Sees Your Heart! This is a rhyme with hand motions. Go through the rhyme (on left column) and actions (corresponding right column) once for the children, then ask them to try to do the rhyme and actions with you.

God looks past how you look on the outside. Touch shoulders with both hands.
He looks at your heart and sees the inside. Point to heart.
David had a heart to know God more and more. Place hands out in front of you, palms up.
Each day he wanted to know God better than before. Point up.
He loved God since he was very young. Place hand down low, palm flat.
Words of praise were always on his tongue. Touch mouth.
He spent a lot of time with God in prayer. Place hands together as if praying.
For he knew God would always be there. Point up.
David's heart was a delight to God above. Point to heart.
For David was special and very much loved. Hug yourself.
God delights in spending time with me too. Point to yourself.
I'm special and important just like you! Point to somebody else.
If I'm not sure, what I should do. Put hands out to side, palms up, wrists bent.
I look in his Word, for its all true. Place hands in front of you, as if holding an open book.
He loves to hear my prayers and praise. Touch mouth.
He longs to be with me every day. Point to yourself.
I want to know God more and more. Point up.
I want to see what he has in store! Throw hands up in the air.
Every day I'll stay close in touch. Place hands together as if praying.
For I love him so very much! Hug yourself, and point up.
Toddler Activity - Grab Bags!
Items Needed:
How to Do Activity:
Small opaque lunch bags or gift bags.

Prep: Fill enough gift bags for your class size, plus extras to allow for extra children that might join you. Fill all grab bags with the same amount of gifts/candy, but place different kinds of things in each bag. Fill clear plastic bag with less things, and do not add the most valuable things. Activity: Place all the bags on the table. Ask the children which bag they would pick if they had a choice. If any of them pick the clear plastic bag, say, "Well, I'm going to give you each one of these other bags. You can open them when you get them. (Give children time to open them). Now you see that we cannot really know what something looks like on the inside. We could not see on the inside of these bags, so the one that we could see looked better to us. But, we found that the ones we could not see the inside had more stuff in them, didn't they? . So, this tells us that we should not look at how a person looks on the outside. They could be really nice and loving on the inside. We don't really know what is in their heart. Only God does.

One clear plastic zipper food bag.
Stickers, candy and/or small toys (big enough not to be choking hazards) ex., Small 5-6" stuffed lambs.
